An American citizen has been sentenced to a year in prison for selling substandard Chinese-made equipment to US security agencies and the military.
According to a news release from the US Attorney's Office, 42-year-old Jeffrey Manning of Washington had a ballistics equipment business called Bulletproof-IT. They sold a variety of military equipment including helmets, body armor and shields to state, local and federal security agencies. Agencies include law enforcement, fire departments and the military.
Jeffrey Manning told buyers that the goods were from the United States, when in fact they were imported from China. For example, Jeffrey bought 600 safety helmets from a Chinese company for $50,000 in 2017 and sold them for $90,000 to another client who sold them to the US State Department for $107,994.
The news release stated that Jeffrey was selling military equipment as American when it was imported from China and was of substandard quality. Furthermore, the citizen also lied about the security checks of the devices. Geoffrey claims that their products meet safety standards. However, the citizen had not tested as per the required criteria. They also changed the testing reports of the equipment to meet the deal.
US Homeland Security Investigation Special Agent Robert Hammer said that Jeffrey Manning planned the fraud under the shadow of fraud. They have not only hurt the security agencies but also the confidence of the nation.
